We’ll cover:
- Machine setup
- Shielding gas selection
- Wire installation
- Feed roller selection
- Polarity
- Synergic programmes
- Voltage Trim
- Dynamic Correction
- Recommended settings
- Troubleshooting
Why Choose the Fronius TransSteel 2200C?
The TransSteel 2200C is one of the most advanced compact synergic MIG welders available.
It offers:
- Synergic control
- Digital parameter adjustment
- Extremely stable arc
- Steel, stainless and aluminium programmes
- Excellent thin sheet performance
- Professional build quality
- Pulse-like arc characteristics (depending on programme)
Equipment You’ll Need
- Fronius TransSteel 2200C
- ER70S-6 Mild Steel Wire
- Argon / CO₂ shielding gas
- Correct drive rollers
- Correct contact tip
- Earth clamp
- Gas regulator
Step 1 – Install the Wire
For most fabrication work choose:
0.8 mm ER70S-6
Suitable for:
- 1 mm
- 2 mm
- 3 mm
- 5 mm
- 6 mm steel
Step 2 – Select the Correct Drive Rollers
Use:
- 0.6 mm
- 0.8 mm
- 1.0 mm
- 1.2 mm
Set roller pressure so the wire feeds smoothly without crushing.
Step 3 – Connect the Shielding Gas
For mild steel:
90% Argon / 10% CO₂
or
92% Argon / 8% CO₂
Recommended flow:
10–14 L/min
Step 4 – Check Polarity
Solid Wire
- Torch (+)
- Earth (−)
Flux Cored
- Torch (−)
- Earth (+)
Step 5 – Enable Synergic Plate Thickness Mode
One of the best features of the Fronius TransSteel 2200C is its Synergic Plate Thickness Mode, which automatically selects the correct wire feed speed and voltage based on the thickness of the steel you’re welding.
If you’ve never used a TransSteel before, here’s how to activate it.
1. Press the Silver Arrow Button
Locate the silver arrow button on the top left-hand side of the control panel.
Press this button until the plate thickness icon is illuminated.
The correct icon is the one showing two arrows with a horizontal line between them.
This indicates the machine is now operating in Plate Thickness Mode rather than manual parameter adjustment.
2. Select the Material Thickness
Once Plate Thickness Mode is active, simply rotate the main control knob.
As you turn the knob, the digital display will change to show the material thickness (in millimetres).
For example:
- 1.0 mm
- 2.0 mm
- 3.0 mm
- 5.0 mm
- 6.0 mm
Select the thickness that most closely matches your workpiece.
3. Let the Machine Do the Work
Once you’ve selected:
- Material
- Wire Diameter
- Shielding Gas
- Plate Thickness
…the TransSteel 2200C automatically calculates:
- Wire Feed Speed
- Welding Voltage
- Current Output
- Arc Characteristics
This is what makes the Fronius Synergic system so effective—it removes much of the guesswork while still allowing experienced welders to fine-tune the arc.
4. Fine-Tune if Required
The automatically selected settings are an excellent starting point.
If required, you can then use:
- Arc Length Correction to make the arc softer or crisper.
- Dynamic Correction to adjust penetration and arc force.
For most mild steel fabrication, many welders find that the default synergic settings require very little adjustment.
Gas Flow
Indoor:
10–14 L/min
Outside:
Increase slightly if required, but remember excessive gas flow can cause turbulence.
Contact Tip to Work Distance
0.8 mm wire:
10–12 mm
1.0 mm wire:
12–15 mm
Common Problems
Too Much Spatter
- Increase Arc Length slightly.
- Check gas flow.
- Clean the material.
Poor Penetration
- Increase Dynamic.
- Increase voltage slightly.
- Slow your travel speed.
Wire Stubbing
Increase wire speed slightly or reduce voltage trim.
Burn Through
Reduce voltage and increase travel speed.
Pro Tips
- Always use quality shielding gas.
- Keep the torch liner clean.
- Replace worn contact tips.
- Use Fronius synergic programmes whenever possible.
- Fine tune with Arc Length and Dynamic rather than switching to manual settings.
My Recommended Everyday Setup
If I were preparing a customer’s TransSteel 2200C for general workshop use:
- 0.8 mm Böhler or equivalent ER70S-6 wire
- 90/10 Argon/CO₂
- Steel Synergic programme
- 0.8 mm wire selected
- Arc Length = 0
- Dynamic = 0
- Gas = 12 L/min
That setup covers the vast majority of mild steel fabrication from around 1–6 mm with only small adjustments.
WeldAssist Pro Tip
Always use Plate Thickness Mode when learning the TransSteel 2200C.
Instead of manually adjusting voltage and wire feed speed independently, simply enter the material thickness and let the Fronius Synergic system calculate the optimum settings. This produces excellent results straight away and makes setup significantly quicker and more consistent, particularly when moving between different material thicknesses.
